Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian is a Canadian-American feminist media critic and public speaker. She is the founder of Feminist Frequency, a site which features video and posts discussing the depictions of females in pop culture. Holding a master's degree in political and social thought from York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public presenter and has presented talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival as well as at the United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. While a student at university she became interested in the issues surrounding gender and rights for women from a young age. She was a young woman who wanted to create the series of videos on the internet that would examine gender roles in video games. In the end, she ended up being the target of cyber-bullying. She was not deterred by the harassment, the fact is that it only bolstered her determination to be a media critic and feminist. In recognition of the many contributions she has made to feminism, she is the recipient of numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian was a multi-award winner for her work as a media critic. She was also the director and founder of Feminist Frequency a nonprofit educational group that focuses on pop-culture depictions of women.
