Hanks' next role - astronaut and commander Jim Lovell, in the docudrama Apollo 13 (1995) - brought him back together with Ron Howard. The film was widely lauded by critics in addition to the performances of the entire ensemble (which comprised Kevin Bacon and Bill Paxton, Gary Sinise and Ed Harris) and Kathleen Quinlan. The film garnered nine Academy Award nominations and won two. Hanks was later seen as Sheriff Woody in Disney/Pixar's computer-animated animated film Toy Story (1995). In the following year, he made his directing debut with the musical comedy That Thing You Do! (1996) which follows the rise and decline of a pop group from the 1960s, also playing the part of a music producer. Richard Schickel of Time magazine described his performance as "charming", and most people who reviewed it agreed that Hanks' portrayal ensured him a spot among the most popular romantic comedy stars of his generation.
